Job Description:
Purpose of Position
Provides leadership and direction for assuring environmental
compliance and enhancing the environmental resources of the
company. Directs the development of strategies to champion our
environmental RESPECT policy. Provides support to professional
staff to identify and define emerging environmental issues.
Coordinates and provides support to the senior vice president
environmental services in guiding and overseeing the environmental
affairs of the organization.
Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Job
Functions)
Adheres to, supports and enforces all safety and environmental
rules, policies and procedures.
Provides direction and counsel to ensure that the company is
proactively working to create responsible environmental laws and
regulations that reflect sound public policy. Responsible for the
review of proposals and development of comments on proposed state
and federal laws and regulations that may impact the organization
and its operating units. Maintains a working knowledge of state and
federal environmental laws, regulations and rules. Works
strategically with agencies such as, but not limited to: California
Air Resources Board, Department of Toxic Substance Control and the
Environmental Protection Agency. Integrates environmental
assessments of existing and anticipated environmental regulations
into planning, budgeting and operating decisions of business units,
advising management of the impact of proposed regulations and
developing potential compliance strategies, and proactively
participating in trade associations such as the Geothermal Energy
Association, Independent Power Producers and sit on various task
forces to assist in the development of environmental laws and
regulations. (30%)
Supports the senior vice president environmental services in the
administration and oversight of all environmental matters for
CalEnergy U.S.'s geothermal operations (15%)
Reviews all written communications relating to environmental
matters originating from within and outside of all geothermal
facilities from regulatory agencies for accuracy, action and issue
identification. This includes but is not limited to: permits,
reports, analytical data, compliance schedules and correspondence.
Provides comments and clarification on documents as appropriate.

Provides direction and counsel to the general manager, projec5t
managers, operations and maintenance supervisors. (20%)
Maintains a working knowledge of environmental issues for all
media. Develops and maintains legislative/regulatory contacts as
necessary to provide essential input on relevant laws and
regulations, and stays abreast of current and proposed federal and
state laws and regulations. (10%)
Performs complex environmental work requiring considerable exercise
of independent analysis and judgment in environmental services.
Anticipates and addresses evolving environmental issues. (5%)
Supports environmental regulatory reporting requirements and may be
required to be on call 24x7 to ensure the company meets its
obligations to timely report environmental incidents.
Performs additional responsibilities as requested or assigned
Position Requirements
Bachelor's degree in environmental engineering, environmental
sciences, the physical sciences, business or related field.
Ten years of experience, with a minimum of five years of experience
with environmental or regulatory issues in a management or lead
capacity.
Requires an advanced knowledge of environmental or other regulatory
policy, laws and regulations, with the demonstrated ability to
analyze and evaluate complex regulatory proposals and environmental
permits and submit written comments and provide testimony at
regulatory proceedings.
Strong communication skills with the demonstrated ability to
communicate complex information accurately and understandably in
written and verbal form. Ability to establish and maintain good
working relationships with government agencies, trade groups and
other industries. Computer skills including competency with
spreadsheets, word processors, presentation tools, etc. or a
demonstrated ability to learn such skills.
A valid driver's license issued in the United States is required
along with a driving record that allows insurability by the company
insurance carrier.
